BACKGROUND - Jonnie Bandy
Jonnie is a native to Florida, born and raised in
Tampa but also thoroughly enjoys spending every chance she gets out West. Sedona
Arizona, Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park and Moab Utah being some of her most scenic,
memorable and enjoyable places to visit. Truly inspiring are natures beauty. Sandstone
rock formations, valley streams and golden sunsets that takes your breath away and make you realize
we are such a small part of God’s creation. Of course she brings her guitar with her on most vacations.
Music has been a part of her life as long as she can remember. Coming from a background of music her
father Jake Chapman was part of the Buckaroos band back in the late 30’s and played live NBC radio shows
until he went into the service. After the service he played many local venues in Tampa and surrounding
counties enjoying the familiar and steady jobs playing not only in upscale venues but also VFW, Moose lodge
and Eagles clubs. Jonnie was no stranger to those affiliations when joining her father playing lead guitar
and mother playing keyboard and vocals when she joined their group as a singer and drummer in their
country trio in 1985.
The last several years Jonnie has dabbled in learning violin but her newest found love since self taught
acoustic rhythm guitar is being able to play music she grew up listening to on the radio which is 70’s and 80’s
classic rock. Over the last 5 years her collection has just grown. “I can’t get enough”. She has always loved
drumming and singing country music but once having the capability to learn an instrument where she could
sing and play at the same time and be able to practice anytime or “however long I wanted” just excelled
with her learning. The past 7 years she has continued to play regular gigs with Billy T. Ray and the Country
Gentlemen with their most valued and rewarding steady gig of the last 6 years is Macdill Air Force Base
Retired Officers Christmas party. “What a great group of people to play music for”. “She looks forward to it
every year. In the fall when the snow birds come down the band really gets busy playing many RV and
mobile home parks.
Jonnie has performed with friends at Ricks on the River and has also done solo work at Proud Lion in Tampa
and also performed there with the group DeepRoot.
She also enjoys giving and sharing her time and talent for charity work. Jonnie has performed the last
5 years for LifePath Hospice Camp Circle of Love for grieving children along with other public
functions for LifePath Hospice such as many volunteer appreciation banquets and memorial
services the last several years. “There is no other feeling quite like the feeling of thanks and
appreciation you receive”.
Jonnie has worked full time for HPC Healthcare the last 8 years and enjoys being able to do her
music as a hobby. Jonnie takes her music seriously but wants to have fun doing it.
She says, “I encourage anyone to follow their dream especially in music. I couldn’t imagine the world
without it.”
BACKGROUND - Pete Cooper
Pete was an Army brat born in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1952. While traveling extensively, he
managed to graduate from Hope Mills High School in 1970. His worldly travels prepared him
for the National Honor Society (don't be impressed, he was # 2 with a 93.3 average and it was
a very small school)
He got his first acoustic guitar for Christmas about 1966. He started playing bass
professionally at 16 and moved to lead guitar when a bass guitarist became available and the
lead player quit. Their group was booked out of Charlotte, N.C. (Hit Attractions). The band
played all the ACC schools for frat parties and beach clubs.
Pete met his wife-to-be at a NCO club gig in Goldsboro, N.C. He and Jerri have been married
for 37 years (April 1, 1972) His last gig was at the Carter Finley stadium while opening for Big
Brother and the Holding Company (Sans Janis Joplin).
Pete joined the Air Force in 1972, ten days after getting married. Traveled many more miles
and was stationed in Illinois, New Jersey. Spain and California. Pete also played in many
garage bands during his early years.
Pete and Jerri have one son who’s a drummer and now works for PSAV, a Disney contractor
in Orlando. They also have two remarkable grandchildren, Kiera and Taryn.
Pete enjoys all kinds of music and cut his teeth with the Beatles, the Stones, Iron Butterfly,
Black Sabbath and whatever was top forty at the time... Pete never had lessons and
plays by ear, a method enjoyed by many musicians of his era.
Today Pete brings a refreshing style to the Bump in the Road band. His tasteful leads
and balanced fills on many of the songs that Jonnie excels on adds a very full sound for
a trio. He also adds backup vocals on many of the trio’s extensive song list.
A big surprise was when the other Bumps learned that Pete could play the Keyboard. Now when Jonnie wants a little
Fleetwood Mac authentic backup sound, Pete whips out the piano. He will also use the organ and harpsichord sounds
on many other tunes and creates an authentic version of the biggest hits. We are glad he has a good ear for
more than just the guitar.
